Unis braced as another international college closes
Universities are worried that negative perceptions about Australia not
wanting international students have spread across websites in China.
The concerns came as another private college went into administration
yesterday, affecting up to 350 international students.HHH International,
College, an English language college in Brisbane, has been hit by debt
and tax issues.
But there is confusion over just how many students are affected. The college
said it had 160 international students but the Department of Education,
Employment and Workplace Relations said the number could reach 350. The
Queensland Education Department said it had records for only 90 international
students.
International student commencements in the English-language sector are down
23 per cent this year, hit by tighter immigration regulations and a soaring
dollar. Universities are braced for a significant downturn.
The Group of Eight sandstone universities are concerned that election
rhetoric around limiting population growth and stopping refugees has fed
perceptions that Australia is not welcoming.
But the comments on Chinese student websites also highlight that tighter
immigration rules are putting students off.
The locals . . . are never happy about bringing in more foreign immigrants,"
said a post last month on the Chinese website Tigtag, according to a
translation the Go8 provided. Go8 executive director Michael Gallagher said
"these things spread . . . and are very hard to contain unless you address
them early".
Another Tigtag post from this month says: "My dear fellows in China, by any
means, don't come here to hand over your money to Australia. It is now
extremely hard to immigrate."
The Go8 chairman, and vice-chancellor of the University of Western Australia,
Alan Robson said "severe damage" was being done to Australia's image.
"Ms Gillard and Mr Abbott should say something about how important
international education is, not from the point of view of generating income .
. . from a point of view of developing Australia's position."
