BANGKOK — One person died as a large fire ravaged in Bangkok’s downtown shop
ping district Wednesday afternoon, forcing hundreds to flee.

Videos and photos posted online show the blaze and thick smoke spreading out f
rom the Centara Grand Hotel, which is located next to the CentralWorld shoppin
g mall. Police said they received reports of the fire just before 6pm.

Firefighters said two people jumped from the hotel to escape the fire. One per
son died at the scene and another was seriously injured.

A local police chief said the fire broke out from a document storage room on t
he 8th floor of the hotel. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
CentralWorld announced a temporary shutdown after hundreds of shoppers were ev
acuated.

Police also said the fire is causing massive traffic congestion on Rama I Road
