Dear Ralph, Ric, Annie and All Campaigners of Zero Waste
If the campaign on Zero Waste reamins on the awareness level without solid
success at the ground level, nothing much would happen. I appreciate the
idea that Zero Waste as a concept is being promoted and accepted by many
around the world.
I have been travelling around the country (India)to analyse and document
community based waste management systems. There have been many such small
projects here in India( Small in the Indian sense - some projects cover more
then 15,000 household collection and composting of the organics and recovery
of recyclables). Even few municipalities in India have been doing very good
work. There are community based projects which have been able to compost
all the organics and recover nearly all recyclalbes from the waste though
good segregation at source is yet to begin in India. The landfill diversion
rate in these projects is from 50% to 80%.
These are the kind of projects that needs to be highlighted and supported. I
am sure with good capacity building workshops for these organisation ( they
are unaware of the good work they are doing) can lead to creation of Zero
Waste decentralised Models.
