BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A major earthquake registering a magnitude of 7.5 shook
central China's eastern Sichuan province Monday
, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

People in Beijing --
about 950 miles (1,528 kilometers) from the quake's epicenter --
felt "a very quiet rolling sensation" that lasted for about a minute
, according to CNN correspondent John Vause.

"Our building began to sway," he said.

There were no immediate reports about the extent of damage or casualties
from the earthquake, which happened at 2:28 p.m. local time (2:28 a.m. ET.)

The Associated Press reported that the quake struck 57 miles (92 kilometers)
northwest of the Sichuan provincial capital of Chengdu
, the survey said on its Web site.
