Tax Information for International Students- Tax Year 2007

International students in F-1 status and their dependents in F-2 status,
who entered the U.S. before January 1, 2008, must file tax Form 8843.

The purpose of the 8843 is to verify that you are exempt from paying U.S.taxes.
If you had no income in 2007, complete the top of the form and Parts I and III,
sign on the back, and mail it to the Internal Revenue Service Center,
Austin, TX 73301-0215, by June 15, 2008. Here are some key points on how
to file tax Form 8843:

·If you do not have a Social Security number or a U.S. Taxpayer
Identification number, you can simply leave this box blank.
You do not need a Social Security or a Taxpayer ID number to file Form 8843.


Part I (4a) – Enter the actual number of days you were present in the U.S.
during 2007, 2006, and 2005. For example, if you entered the U.S. on January
1, 2007 and stayed in the U.S. for the entire year, then you will enter 365
days under 4a for the year 2007, 0 days for 2006 and 0 days for 2005. The
total number of days you need to enter in 4b should equal 365.


·Part II – Unless you are enrolled in the Teaching English as a Second
Language Program, this part is not applicable to you.



If you had income in 2007 and are filing Form 1040NR or Form 1040NR-EZ you
must also attach Form 8843 and mail your tax return by the due date, April 15,
to the address shown in your tax return instructions. We recommend that you
consult either the Internal Revenue Service or a Certified Public
Accountant/tax attorney for more complicated tax questions.
