it depends

NYC: clothing & footwear: under $110 no tax, over $110 4.375%
others, bags, and accessaries : 8.375%

Boston: clothing: under $ 175 no tax, over $175 5%
others, bags,footwear and accessories: 5%

in fact the differenciation is very detailed and complicate
what's above is just a very general category
but for temporary stay I think it would be enough
